Saddle up for one of Montana’s rowdiest and most exciting western weekends May 14 - 17.

The World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is a big, high-energy rodeo weekend in Miles City, Montana, that people sometimes call “Cowboy Mardi Gras.” Every year on the third full weekend in May, the town fills up with visitors who come to watch bucking horses, fast races, and brave cowboys try to hang on.

Fun fact: This event started with ranchers selling horses that were extra good at bucking!

What Is the Bucking Horse Sale?

The Bucking Horse Sale started as a way for ranchers to sell horses that liked to buck, and it has grown into one of the most famous western events in Montana. Today, it is still an important place for rodeo stock contractors to find tough, athletic horses that will be used in rodeos across the United States and Canada.

During the weekend, some horses are sold, and some are ridden in rodeo events so buyers can see how powerful they are. That means the sale is part horse business, part rodeo show, and all-around western fun.

A Whole Weekend of Action

This event is not just one rodeo; it is a whole weekend packed with things to see and do. There is a kick-off concert, a Main Street parade, a big trade show, horse races, wild horse races, and a special bronc riding event called the PRCA Xtreme Broncs Match.

People sometimes call it “Cowboy Mardi Gras” because the whole town turns into one big celebration with crowds, music, and dancing in the streets. It is the kind of weekend where cowboy boots, pickup trucks, and cheering fans seem to be everywhere you look.

Horse Races and Fast Hooves

The Bucking Horse Sale is also known for its exciting horse races at the local track. It is one of the last race meets in the region, and the races bring plenty of hoof-thundering action.

Fans can watch speedy horses dash down the track while adults place legal bets on which horse they think will win. Even if you are not picking a favorite, it is fun to hear the crowd roar as the horses race toward the finish line.

For kids, the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale can feel like stepping into a real-life western movie. You can watch colorful parades, see powerful horses bucking and racing, listen to live music, and explore booths at the trade show with snacks and western gear.

If you go, be ready for dust, noise, and a lot of cheering as cowboys and cowgirls test their skills and the horses show just how high they can kick. It is loud, lively, and full of old-fashioned Montana spirit.
